DAISY THE DINOSAUR
Daisy the Dinosaur is a Visual Programming Application which is downloadable from your child's iPad and free on the app store. This application looks at sending commands to a Dinosaur which will live replay whatever the command is. The simplicity of this application is terrific as all who have an iPad can use it without needing any prior skills/knowledge. The idea of this app is also that pace can be set by your child, so no one student can excel further than the other. The challenge based section works on your children following a number of commands and then re-inputing them to the Visual Command Prompt, and then watching their commands come to life. This problem solving technique is what we use to identify that your child can "Define simple problems, and describe and follow a sequence of steps and decisions involving branching and user input (algorithms) needed to solve them (VCDTCD023)".
Together, to better understand how the app works, complete the first 3 challenges together, and then one on your own, allowing your child to watch, and then the next one, encourage your child to do that on their own. Once comfort is shown in completing the set tasks, go into the free play zone and give "verbal commands" to your child and see if they can translate that to the commands on offer. Example "make Daisy move half way, then jump and spin 5 times."
